Zapfino was designed by Hermann Zapf and released by Linotype in 1998. Unlike a conventional script font built around a single set of letters, Zapfino was conceived to reproduce some of the variation found in real calligraphy, using alternate characters and ligatures to avoid a mechanically repeated appearance.

From a 1944 Sketch to a Digital Typeface

The origins of Zapfino go back to calligraphy Hermann Zapf created in 1944. Decades later, digital typography finally made it possible to turn those freely drawn forms into a working typeface without reducing them to one rigid alphabet. Zapf began exploring the idea with David Siegel in the early 1990s before the project was eventually completed with Linotype.

The first Zapfino release used four interchangeable alphabets together with additional alternates, ligatures and ornamental forms. These variations were central to the design: the goal was not simply to imitate handwriting, but to let repeated letters change shape in a way that feels closer to lettering produced by hand.

The macOS Version of Zapfino

The Zapfino.ttf file available here is version 18.0d1e2, the Zapfino build distributed by Apple with macOS. Apple has included Zapfino as a system typeface for many years, where its advanced typographic features allow applications to make use of the font’s ligatures and alternate glyphs.

Zapfino vs. Zapfino Extra

Zapfino should not be confused with Zapfino Extra. Hermann Zapf later expanded the original design in collaboration with Akira Kobayashi, adding many more alternates, ornaments, small caps, ligatures, dramatic hyper-flourishes and a heavier Forte style. The file on this page is the standard macOS Zapfino rather than the separate Zapfino Extra family.
