The YouTube Shorts logo is built around a red vertical symbol with a white play button at its center. Its two rounded sections form a stylized “S” for Shorts while retaining the triangular play symbol of the wider YouTube identity, making the format recognizable as part of YouTube even when the icon appears without a wordmark.

The Shorts identity was developed under design lead Aaron La Lau together with YouTube’s in-house Art Department and Marketing teams. The symbol follows the underlying grid used across the YouTube app icon family, while its curved shape was designed to suggest creativity, speed, energy and forward movement rather than simply drawing a literal letter S.

YouTube announced Shorts on September 14, 2020 and began testing an early beta in India as a mobile-first way to create and watch short vertical videos. The beta expanded to the United States in March 2021 before Shorts rolled out to more than 100 countries, establishing the format as a major part of the YouTube platform.

The red Shorts symbol remains the core identity of the format today. YouTube has continued to update the Shorts player, creation tools and viewing experience, but the distinctive S-shaped play icon continues to identify Shorts throughout the platform.
