The YouTube logo combines a red rounded play-button icon with the YouTube wordmark. This structure was introduced in 2017, when the familiar play symbol was moved outside the wordmark and given a much more prominent role. The redesign created a flexible identity in which the icon can also work independently on apps, small screens and other spaces where the full logo would be difficult to use.
YouTube’s original 2005 logo took a very different approach, placing “Tube” inside a red rounded shape resembling a television screen. Co-founder Chad Hurley designed the original identity after finding inspiration in an unusual combination of the Caltrain logo from the San Francisco Bay Area and the visual style of TV Guide. The 2017 redesign removed that red container from the wordmark but preserved the connection to video by turning the play button into the brand’s primary symbol.
YouTube was founded in 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, who had previously worked at PayPal. The YouTube domain was registered on February 14, 2005, and the first video, “Me at the zoo,” was uploaded by Karim on April 23. Google acquired YouTube the following year, while the platform continued to operate under its own name and visual identity.
The 2017 logo remains the foundation of the YouTube identity today. Later interface and visual system updates have changed elements such as colors, buttons and layouts without replacing the main logo. YouTube also created a limited 20th-anniversary logo in 2025, but it was a celebratory variation rather than a permanent redesign.
