Wingdings fonts use symbols in place of ordinary letters and numbers. Each version has a different character set, so the same keyboard key may produce a completely different symbol depending on which Wingdings font you select.

About Wingdings

Kris Holmes and Charles Bigelow created the symbols that became the original Wingdings. Microsoft released the font in 1992 after reorganizing artwork from the Lucida Icons, Lucida Arrows and Lucida Stars collections.

Wingdings 2 and Wingdings 3 later expanded the idea with different symbol sets. Wingdings 2 includes more geometric marks, enclosed characters, hands and decorative symbols. Wingdings 3 puts much more emphasis on arrows and directional graphics.

Using Wingdings

The three fonts are useful for arrows, bullets, check marks, simple icons and retro computer graphics. Wingdings 3 is particularly useful when a design needs directional arrows, while Wingdings 2 offers a broader mix of symbols.

These fonts should not be used for normal text. The characters only appear as symbols while the Wingdings font is applied, which can cause problems when text is copied, searched or opened on a system without the font installed.

Similar Fonts

Webdings and Zapf Dingbats are the closest alternatives. Webdings has a similar computer-era symbol set, while Zapf Dingbats focuses more on traditional typographic ornaments and marks.
