Volkswagen introduced its current logo in September 2019 as part of the “New Volkswagen” brand identity. The familiar stacked V and W remained at the center of the design, but the previous three-dimensional metallic badge was replaced by a thinner, flat two-dimensional mark designed to work more effectively across digital interfaces, vehicles and physical signage.

The redesign was developed primarily by Volkswagen’s internal Design and Marketing teams, with then-Chief Designer Klaus Bischoff playing a key role in the new identity. Rather than reinventing the symbol, the team stripped it back to its essential elements, creating one of the simplest versions of the VW roundel in the company’s history.

The new logo debuted alongside the ID.3 electric car at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, linking the visual change with Volkswagen’s move toward electric mobility. The rollout was enormous: around 70,000 logos at more than 10,000 dealerships and service locations were scheduled to be replaced across 171 markets.
