The Utah Jazz logo is built around the franchise’s famous J-note, where a basketball and musical note form the letter “J” in Jazz. The symbol dates back to the team’s founding as the New Orleans Jazz in 1974 and was retained when the franchise moved to Utah in 1979, making it one of the NBA’s longest-running visual ideas.
The latest version became the team’s primary global logo for the 2025–26 season as part of the Jazz’s wider “Mountain Basketball” identity. The familiar note was retained but simplified and recolored in Mountain Purple, replacing the black, white and yellow identity introduced in 2022. The recent brand work has been developed by the Utah Jazz creative team, led on the brand side by Senior Brand Director Ben Barnes, although the team has not publicly credited the latest logo refinement to a single designer.
The Jazz name is itself a reminder of the franchise’s New Orleans origins. The original purple, green and gold colors were inspired by Mardi Gras, and although the team moved more than 1,500 miles to Salt Lake City, both the name and musical-note symbol survived. Purple has now returned as the centerpiece of the identity after the team’s brief black-and-yellow era.
