The Troll Face was drawn in Microsoft Paint on September 19, 2008, by then-18-year-old Oakland artist Carlos Ramirez, who posted it to his DeviantArt page under the username “Whynne” as part of a rage comic titled Trolls. Ramirez shared the comic on 4chan’s video games board, where the image quickly caught on as a shorthand for internet trolling. From there it spread to Reddit — especially the r/f7u12 rage comics community — and later to Tumblr, Imgur, and virtually every corner of the early meme internet, becoming one of the oldest and most widely recognized rage comic faces of all time.

Ramirez registered the character with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2010 and has since licensed it commercially, including a run of shirts sold through Hot Topic, reportedly earning over $100,000 in licensing fees and settlements. He has also pursued copyright claims over unauthorized commercial use of the image, most notably a 2015 DMCA takedown that removed the game Meme Run from the Wii U eShop.

Because of this history, the Troll Face is best treated as fan-use material — fine for memes, personal projects, and non-commercial content, but worth a second thought before using it in anything sold or monetized at scale.
