Download Trattatello font for free in TTF format. Trattatello is an expressive calligraphic typeface with sweeping capitals, sharp pen-like strokes and an unmistakably Renaissance character. The download includes the Regular style as a TrueType font.

Designed by James Grieshaber, Trattatello is the macOS version of P22 Operina, a digital interpretation of the writing of 16th-century Italian calligrapher Ludovico degli Arrighi. Its elaborate forms make it particularly suited to titles, invitations, book covers and other display typography where the lettering itself is intended to attract attention.

A Typeface With Renaissance Roots

The story behind Trattatello reaches back much further than the digital font itself. P22 Operina was based on the work of Ludovico degli Arrighi, whose 1522 writing manual La Operina demonstrated the elegant cancelleresca, or chancery cursive, associated with Renaissance Italy. James Grieshaber translated that historical source into a contemporary digital typeface, which later appeared on macOS under the Trattatello name.

Rather than imitating casual handwriting, Trattatello keeps the deliberate rhythm and dramatic flourishes of formal penmanship. Its narrow lowercase letters contrast with highly decorative capitals and swashes, giving short words and headings a particularly distinctive appearance. It works best at display sizes where these details have room to remain visible.

Trattatello and P22 Operina

If Trattatello looks familiar under another name, there is a reason. It is closely tied to P22 Operina, the typeface released by P22 Type Foundry from Grieshaber’s interpretation of Arrighi’s lettering. Operina was originally developed in multiple calligraphic variations, while Trattatello became the name used for the version distributed with macOS.
