The Toronto Raptors’ current logo is based on the circular identity introduced for the 2015–16 season. Designed by creative agency Sid Lee, the mark replaces the team’s earlier dinosaur imagery with a basketball slashed by three raptor claw marks, creating a simpler symbol that grew out of the “We The North” era of the franchise.
The latest update arrived for the 2020–21 season and refined the existing logo rather than replacing it. Silver was removed from the primary color scheme, the basketball became red and the outer border was simplified, leaving the team with the red, black and white version used today. No individual designer has been publicly credited for this color update.
The Raptors name itself was selected through a nationwide fan contest before the team’s first NBA season. More than 2,000 different names were submitted, with finalists ranging from Grizzlies and Dragons to Hogs and Tarantulas. The new dinosaur identity proved immediately successful: the franchise reported more than $20 million in merchandise sales during the first month after the original logo was unveiled in 1994.
