The current Sony logo was introduced in 1973 and has remained essentially unchanged for more than five decades. Designed by Sony’s in-house designer Yasuo Kuroki, the wordmark refined the serif lettering the company had been developing since the late 1950s into the bold, balanced form still used across the Sony Group today.

The logo uses custom letterforms based on a Clarendon-style serif, with carefully adjusted proportions that give the four-letter name a distinctive appearance without relying on a separate symbol. Earlier versions of the wordmark appeared after the company began using the Sony name in the 1950s, before Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo officially became Sony Corporation in 1958.

Sony came surprisingly close to replacing the logo in 1981, when it launched an international design competition to mark its 35th anniversary. Nearly 30,000 entries were submitted and three finalists were selected, but Sony ultimately decided not to adopt any of them. The 1973 wordmark survived and remains one of the longest-running corporate logos in the technology industry.
