Segoe UI is one of the most familiar interface typefaces in Microsoft’s visual system. It became the default user interface font with Windows Vista in 2007 and helped replace the older, tighter Windows look associated with fonts like Tahoma.

The family was designed by Steve Matteson for Microsoft. Its open shapes, soft humanist details and clean spacing make it useful for dashboards, admin panels, app mockups, documentation pages, business presentations and Windows-style interface design.

Design Background

Segoe UI belongs to the larger Segoe type family, but Microsoft adapted this cut for interface typography. It needed to work in menus, windows, settings screens, dialog boxes and small system text.

Before Vista, Windows users mostly saw Tahoma and Microsoft Sans Serif in the interface. Those fonts were practical, but they had a more compact and older software feeling. Segoe UI made Windows typography feel more open, softer and more modern.

Another useful detail is its Office history. Microsoft’s typography page notes that Segoe UI became the default Windows interface font in 2007, but it was not added to Office for non-Windows devices until 2022.

Segoe UI vs Segoe

Segoe UI and Segoe are related, but they are not the same thing. The UI version is the practical screen font used in Windows and Microsoft interface contexts.

The broader Segoe family includes other styles connected with Microsoft branding, product typography and specialized use cases. For Windows-style interface mockups, Segoe UI is the relevant choice.
