The San Antonio Spurs have built their identity around the same visual idea since the franchise arrived in San Antonio in 1973: a cowboy spur replacing the letter “U” in Spurs. The original logo was designed by local artist Finis Collins while working at the Pitluk Group advertising agency, and the concept has survived every major update to the team’s branding.
The current primary logo was introduced for the 2017–18 season, refining the typography and simplifying the long-running black, silver and white identity while keeping the iconic spur symbol intact. No individual designer has been publicly credited for the 2017 refinement. The team added three new secondary marks in 2022, but confirmed that its primary logo and classic spur icon would remain unchanged.
An interesting detail is how quickly the original identity came together. Collins was simply asked to incorporate a spur into the design and studied real examples at San Antonio’s Witte Museum before developing the mark. More than five decades later, the spur-shaped “U” remains the defining element of the franchise’s visual identity.
