The Sacramento Kings introduced their current primary logo on April 26, 2016, as part of a complete identity refresh ahead of the opening of Golden 1 Center. The design combines a crown, basketball and bold Kings lettering, replacing the more elaborate shield-style identity that had represented the team since the 1990s.
The new identity was created by RARE Design, led by founder and principal Rodney Richardson. Rather than starting from scratch, the studio drew heavily from the Kings logo used when the franchise arrived in Sacramento in 1985, simplifying and modernizing its crown-and-basketball structure with a new typeface and cleaner geometry.
An interesting detail is that RARE Design initially explored very different directions, including medieval imagery and animal symbols. The final concept emerged after Richardson sketched a basketball topped by a crown and the team realized it had unintentionally rediscovered one of the strongest ideas from its own history.
