Red Hat introduced its current logo on May 1, 2019, replacing the long-running Shadowman identity with a simplified red fedora and bold Red Hat wordmark. The redesign retained the most recognizable element of the previous logo while creating a cleaner symbol that works more effectively across websites, apps, small icons and physical applications.

The identity was created through Red Hat’s Open Brand Project, a collaboration between the company’s in-house design team and Pentagram, led by partner Paula Scher. Rather than relying on a single designer, Red Hat involved employees and its wider community throughout the process. The accompanying wordmark uses the Red Hat type family, developed with type designer Jeremy Mickel.

The hat has a story that predates the company itself. Co-founder Marc Ewing was known for wearing his grandfather’s red Cornell lacrosse cap while studying at Carnegie Mellon University, where students looking for technical help were told to “look for the guy in the red hat.” The company later adopted that nickname, and the hat eventually became its most recognizable visual symbol.
