The Portland Trail Blazers have used their distinctive “pinwheel” symbol since the franchise’s first season in 1970. The original logo was designed by Frank Glickman, cousin of team founder Harry Glickman, as an abstract representation of basketball: five lines on each side represent the five players on two opposing teams coming together in competition.
The current version was introduced on May 8, 2017, modernizing the pinwheel while staying close to the original concept. The lines were connected more consistently, red returned to the upper half, silver was replaced by white in the primary mark, and the overall geometry was simplified. The 2017 rebrand was developed with members of the Trail Blazers creative team, including work credited to Bojan Gavric in collaboration with Aaron James Draplin and Mario Milosevic.
One subtle detail is the 45-degree angle used in the modern pinwheel. Beyond giving the mark a sense of movement, the team linked the angle to the 45th Parallel North, which runs through Oregon and reinforces the logo’s connection to the Pacific Northwest.
