The PlayStation logo was created by Japanese designer Manabu Sakamoto for the launch of the original console in 1994. The symbol combines a standing “P” with an “S” lying beneath it, creating an optical illusion of depth that reflected PlayStation’s early emphasis on three-dimensional gaming.

The logo’s core shape has remained remarkably consistent since its debut. Its most significant modern update came in 2009, when the original red, yellow, green and blue palette was replaced by a simpler monochrome treatment. The current identity therefore retains Sakamoto’s original P-and-S construction while adapting it to a cleaner and more flexible visual system.

An interesting part of the design process is that Sony considered more than 30 logo concepts before selecting Sakamoto’s final mark. He also created a black-and-white version alongside the original colored logo, meaning the monochrome approach used by PlayStation today was already part of the identity’s earliest development.
