The Phoenix Suns introduced their current primary logo on June 26, 2013. It retains the franchise’s long-running sunburst basketball but places it against a black background with updated Phoenix Suns lettering, combining elements of several earlier Suns identities in a darker and more modern design.
The 2013 redesign was developed with Principal Fisher, which worked with the Suns to update the sunburst, typography and overall color system. Rather than replacing the team’s visual identity, the designers deliberately preserved the basketball-as-the-sun concept that has represented the franchise since its first NBA season in 1968.
That original concept was created by Tucson designer Stan Fabe, making the sunburst one of the longest-running ideas in NBA branding. Over the decades the logo has changed shape, typography and colors, but the flaming basketball has remained at the center of every primary Suns identity.
