The Philadelphia 76ers introduced their current primary logo on May 12, 2015, ahead of the 2015–16 NBA season. The design modernized the franchise’s classic basketball logo by placing the familiar red and blue “76ers” mark inside a circular Philadelphia wordmark, while preserving the 13 stars that have been part of the team’s identity since its move to Philadelphia in 1963.
The current design draws heavily from the basketball logo used from 1977 to 1997, rather than creating an entirely new symbol. The Sixers did not publicly credit an individual designer or agency for the 2015 update. Its core “76” and 13-star concept dates back to the original Philadelphia identity, with the stars referencing the 13 original American colonies and reinforcing the connection between the 76ers name, Philadelphia and 1776.
The 2015 refresh also introduced one of the team’s more unusual secondary marks: Benjamin Franklin dribbling a basketball. The historical references extend across the identity, combining Philadelphia’s role in the American Revolution with visual elements from several different eras of Sixers basketball.
