Peugeot introduced its current logo on February 25, 2021, replacing the full-bodied lion used since 2010 with a lion’s head inside a shield. The redesign is the eleventh major version of the company’s famous lion emblem and was created by Peugeot Design Lab, the brand’s in-house Global Brand Design studio. W agency worked with Peugeot on the wider visual identity surrounding the new mark.
The Peugeot lion has a much longer history than the company’s cars. Jules and Émile Peugeot commissioned goldsmith and engraver Justin Blazer to create the original symbol in 1847, when the company was best known for tools and saw blades. The lion appeared on Peugeot saws from 1850 and was officially registered as a trademark in 1858.
The animal was originally chosen to represent three qualities of Peugeot’s saw blades: strong teeth, a flexible blade and a fast cut. This means one of the automotive world’s oldest brand symbols actually began as a mark for steel tools decades before Peugeot built its first automobile.
