The Oklahoma City Thunder introduced its current identity on September 3, 2008, shortly after the former Seattle SuperSonics franchise relocated to Oklahoma City. The logo combines a shield-shaped basketball graphic with the bold “OKC” initials and the Thunder wordmark, creating an identity intended to feel simple, energetic and closely connected to its new home.
The logo was developed with Oklahoma City advertising agency Ackerman McQueen in collaboration with the Thunder organization and the NBA. Its light blue was inspired by the blue found on the Oklahoma state flag, while the warm red and yellow accents were intended to evoke the state’s landscape and sunsets. The primary logo has remained largely unchanged since its 2008 debut.
The Thunder name was chosen to suggest power and energy while also referencing the dramatic storms associated with Oklahoma. One memorable detail from the original launch is that the identity was unveiled to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck,” reinforcing the new team’s name from its very first public presentation.
