The New Orleans Pelicans identity was introduced in January 2013 when the franchise announced its move away from the Hornets name. Designed by Rodney Richardson and RARE Design, the logo centers on a pelican with its wings spread around a basketball, tying the team directly to Louisiana, where the brown pelican is the state bird and a long-standing regional symbol.
The logo received its latest major update for the 2023–24 season. The original pelican artwork was retained, but the global logo was simplified by removing the decorative arch, fleur-de-lis and red lower panel, with a cleaner New Orleans Pelicans wordmark placed beneath the bird. The original 2013 identity was created by RARE Design, while no individual designer has been publicly credited for the 2023 refinement.
The Pelicans name has roots in New Orleans long before the NBA team adopted it. Professional baseball clubs in the city used the New Orleans Pelicans name as far back as the 19th century, while the modern basketball identity also connects the bird with resilience and the recovery of Louisiana’s Gulf Coast. The blue, gold and red palette was chosen to reference both Louisiana and New Orleans.
