Zuzana Licko designed Mrs Eaves for Emigre in 1996. The typeface is based on the ideas behind John Baskerville’s famous transitional serif designs, but Licko did not simply reproduce the original letterforms. She studied printed examples of Baskerville and developed a softer interpretation with reduced stroke contrast, wider lowercase characters and more visible personality.

The name Mrs Eaves refers to Sarah Eaves, John Baskerville’s housekeeper and partner, whom he later married. The historical reference connects the modern typeface directly to the Baskerville tradition that inspired its design.

Mrs Eaves became one of Emigre’s best-known typefaces and is especially associated with literary and editorial design. Its generous proportions and loose spacing make it particularly effective on book covers, title pages and short text rather than tightly packed long-form typography.
