The Miami Heat have used the flaming basketball as the centerpiece of their identity since the franchise entered the NBA in 1988. The original concept was created by Mark Henderson and Richard Lyons, whose design showed a basketball on fire passing through a hoop — a simple visual combination of basketball and the team’s Heat name.
The current version was introduced for the 1999–2000 season. It kept the original composition but replaced the bright orange ball and black hoop with a deeper red basketball, yellow flames and a white hoop, creating the cleaner version still used as the team’s primary logo today. No individual designer has been publicly credited for the 1999 refinement.
The original logo came from a public design competition that attracted around 13,000 submissions, with Henderson and Lyons’ flaming-ball concept receiving about 34 percent of the vote. Two of the other leading proposals reportedly featured basketballs wearing sunglasses, making the logo Miami ultimately chose look surprisingly timeless by comparison.
