The Memphis Grizzlies’ current identity is built around the intimidating grizzly bear head introduced in 2004. The logo was created by RARE Design, led by Rodney Richardson, after an extensive development process involving the team, NBA, players and fan research. Its focused eyes and simplified bear form were designed to represent strength, determination and the gritty character the franchise wanted to associate with Memphis basketball.
The logo received its latest update on August 2, 2018. The basic bear design remained intact, but the lightest blue was removed from the snout, a dark gray outline was added and the accompanying typography was redesigned. The 2018 refresh was the result of a multi-year creative process, although no individual designer has been publicly credited for the final refinement.
The colors contain a few subtle Memphis references. Beale Street Blue takes its name from the city’s famous music district, while Grizzlies Gold was originally described as a reference to the colors of Egyptian royalty — a playful connection between Memphis, Tennessee and the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis.
