Makita introduced its current logo in 1991, the same year the company officially changed its name from Makita Electric Works to Makita Corporation. The distinctive angular wordmark was designed by Italian industrial designer Giorgetto Giugiaro as part of an effort to create a stronger and more recognizable identity for Makita’s growing international business.
The logo has remained essentially unchanged for more than three decades, making it one of the more enduring identities in the power tool industry. Its sharp, connected letterforms give the wordmark a mechanical and technical character without relying on a separate symbol or icon.
Giugiaro’s involvement with Makita went beyond the logo. His design studio also worked on a family of Makita power tools in the early 1990s, developing a consistent visual language intended to make the products immediately recognizable to customers around the world.
