The Louis Vuitton identity is centered on its interlocking “LV” monogram, created by Georges Vuitton in 1896 as a tribute to his father and company founder Louis Vuitton. The initials formed part of the Monogram canvas alongside geometric floral motifs, creating a distinctive signature at a time when the company’s successful luggage designs were increasingly being copied.
Georges developed the Monogram using influences from decorative art, Japonism and Gothic heraldic forms. Its four original elements included the overlapping LV initials and three stylized floral motifs. More than a century later, the LV monogram remains essentially unchanged at the center of the brand’s identity and continues to appear both as a standalone symbol and alongside the Louis Vuitton wordmark.
Louis Vuitton founded the Maison in Paris in 1854 as a specialist trunk maker. The Monogram arrived more than four decades later and became one of the most enduring symbols in fashion, surviving generations of products, creative directors and artistic collaborations without losing its original structure. In 2026, Louis Vuitton marked the 130th anniversary of the design with collections based on Georges Vuitton’s historic Monogram canvas.
