The Los Angeles Lakers’ current logo is built around a design first introduced in the 1960s, featuring the Lakers name across a basketball with horizontal speed lines extending from the lettering. The basic composition has survived for decades, with most later changes focused on colors, proportions and small graphic refinements rather than replacing the identity.
The latest update arrived for the 2023–24 season, when the purple used in the primary logo was darkened again. The familiar gold basketball, purple lettering and motion lines remained unchanged. No individual designer has been publicly credited for the original 1960s mark or the latest color refinement.
The Lakers name is actually a remnant of the franchise’s original home in Minneapolis. It was inspired by Minnesota’s “Land of 10,000 Lakes” nickname and was kept when the team moved to Los Angeles in 1960. The speed-line logo that followed soon after became so closely associated with the team that its overall structure has now survived for around six decades.
