The current L’Oréal wordmark dates back to 1962 and has remained remarkably consistent for more than six decades. The design uses slender uppercase lettering with subtle differences in scale between the characters, creating the elegant and restrained appearance that has become closely associated with the beauty company.

The 1962 redesign simplified an earlier, heavier version of the wordmark that had been used for decades. Since then, L’Oréal has made only minor adjustments to how the mark is reproduced across packaging, advertising and digital media rather than replacing its core design. No individual designer has been publicly credited for the current wordmark.

The name itself goes back to founder Eugène Schueller’s early hair-coloring business. One of his products was called “L’Auréale,” and he gradually simplified the name through Oréal to L’Oréal. The company officially adopted L’Oréal as its corporate name in 1939, giving the wordmark a direct connection to the brand’s earliest history.
