Lemon Milk has one of the more charming origin stories in modern type design. In early 2014, Indonesian designer Muhammad Ariq Syauqi — better known as Marsnev — was part of the crew behind a student zine at Universitas Indonesia called “Lemon/Milk,” and drew the font specifically as the zine’s visual identity. Uploaded to DaFont as a casual side project, it took off far beyond anyone’s expectations, eventually passing 2.5 million downloads and spreading from local shops to international brands, Indonesian TV programs, and film posters along the way.

Marsnev kept developing the font as their own skills grew — a 2015 update added European accents and proper kerning, and version 3.0 expanded the single weight into the full family included in this download. In 2020, the design graduated into Lemon Milk Pro, a commercial release that finally added the long-requested lowercase letters, extended Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek coverage, and grew to 9 weights with variable font support. Marsnev, now based in Reading, England, has described Lemon Milk as a reflection of their whole journey as a type designer — a font that grew up alongside its creator.

Design Characteristics

Lemon Milk is built on strict geometric construction with unusually sharp corner cuts — the detail that separates it from rounder geometric peers like Montserrat or Poppins. Because the free version is uppercase-only (typing lowercase produces smaller caps), it pushes designs toward the bold, poster-like look it became known for.
