The current LEGO logo has been used since 1998 and is a refined version of the identity introduced in 1973. Its white rounded lettering, black and yellow outlines and red square background were retained, while the proportions and spacing were tightened to create a cleaner mark better suited to modern reproduction and digital use.
The core design dates to 1973, when LEGO removed the “System” name and multicolored stripes from its previous identity and placed greater emphasis on the LEGO wordmark. The 1998 update changed only small details, and no individual designer has been publicly credited for the current version; official logo assets attribute the mark to The LEGO Group.
The LEGO name has an equally distinctive story. Founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen created it by combining the Danish words “leg godt,” meaning “play well.” The name was officially adopted in 1936, long before the modern LEGO brick appeared, and Kristiansen later discovered that “lego” can also be translated from Latin as “I gather” or “I collect” — a coincidence that fits the brand remarkably well.
