Lato Font Family Free Download

Lato is the typeface a bank rejected — and the internet adopted. Shelved by its original corporate client in 2010, it went open-source instead and grew into one of the three most-served fonts on Google Fonts, with over a billion views a day. This download includes the classic family with its full weight range and matching italics.

Summer in Warsaw

Lato was drawn in the summer of 2010 by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic — the name simply means “summer” in Polish. Originally, it was commissioned as a corporate typeface for a large Polish bank. However, the client changed stylistic direction, and the finished family was left without a home. Rather than shelve it forever, Dziedzic released it that December through his foundry tyPoland, under the SIL Open Font License and with Google’s support. The rejection turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to the design: on Google Fonts, Lato climbed to third place behind only Roboto and Open Sans, and by 2018 it was serving over a billion views daily across more than 9.6 million websites.

The family was massively expanded in 2013–2014, with the help of Adam Twardoch and Botio Nikoltchev. The update — Lato 2.0 — grew the character set past 3,000 glyphs per style, covering 100+ Latin-based languages, 50+ Cyrillic-based languages, plus Greek and IPA phonetics, while adding four new weights and reworked spacing throughout.

“Serious but Friendly”

Dziedzic set himself a deliberately contradictory brief. In body text, Lato should be “transparent” — so unobtrusive that readers never notice it. At display sizes, though, it should reveal genuine personality. He solved the puzzle with classical proportions in the uppercase for harmony, and semi-rounded stroke details that surface warmth as the type gets bigger. His own summary of the result has become the font’s unofficial tagline: “Male and female, serious but friendly. With the feeling of the Summer.” That dual character is exactly why Lato works in so many contexts — corporate sites trust it, while consumer brands find it approachable. Since 2022, it has even served as the logotype of Save the Children.

Using Lato Well

Lato is one of the rare free sans-serifs that genuinely handles both jobs: body text and display. Regular and the lighter weights make comfortable, neutral paragraph text for websites, reports, and interfaces. Meanwhile, the heavier cuts — Bold through Black — carry headlines with the semi-rounded warmth that distinguishes Lato from stricter grotesques. It pairs naturally with serif faces like Merriweather or Playfair Display for editorial layouts. For an all-sans system, it sits comfortably alongside its Google Fonts peers without clashing.

Open Sans and Source Sans 3 are Lato’s closest peers — humanist, screen-first, and free. Roboto covers the same territory with a slightly more mechanical voice. For a warmer, rounder take, Nunito Sans leans further into friendliness, while Inter is the modern UI-focused option with tighter engineering. Among commercial faces, Lato is most often reached for as a free stand-in for Avenir and Museo Sans.
