Kreon is a slab serif that learned good manners — sturdy enough for headlines, gentle enough for paragraphs. Designed for magazine and news typesetting, it has quietly served blogs and editorial sites since joining Google Fonts in 2011. This download includes the classic 3-style static family — Light, Regular, and Bold — plus the Variable Font version.

A Slab Built for Reading

Kreon was designed by Julia Petretta, a type and graphic designer, around 2010, and released through Google Fonts as one of the platform’s early open-source serifs. Her brief for the design was specific: text typesetting for magazines and news sites. That focus shows in every decision. Most slab serifs are display faces first — heavy, blocky, built to shout. Kreon takes the opposite route: only a slight slab look, low stroke contrast, and rounded, friendly details that hold up in running paragraphs, not just headlines.

The font didn’t stand still after release. In 2018–2020, the project was rebuilt under Google Fonts’ modern pipeline with contributions from Omnibus-Type, the Argentine collective behind many of the platform’s updates. Out of that rework came the variable version included in this download, carrying a continuous weight axis from Light to Bold in a single file.

Where Kreon Fits

Kreon’s natural home is editorial: blog posts, online magazines, news layouts, and long-form articles that want more character than a neutral sans without the formality of a bookish serif. The Light cut makes airy, modern headings. Regular carries body text with a warm, sturdy rhythm. Bold anchors headlines and pull quotes. Since the family ships without italics, plan emphasis through weight and size instead. For pairing, a clean geometric sans like Montserrat or a UI workhorse like Open Sans balances Kreon’s slab warmth nicely.
