Istok Web has one of the most unusual origin stories on Google Fonts: it began life as math typography. Its earliest letters were adapted from METAFONT sources built for the TeX scientific typesetting community, before evolving into a fully original screen font. From Scientific Typesetting to the Web

Istok Web was created by Andrey V. Panov, a Russian designer who began the project in 2008 — “istok” means “source” or “wellspring” in Russian. His starting point was unconventional. Rather than sketching letters from scratch, Panov modified METAFONT sources from CM Bright, a font family built for TeX, the typesetting system used across mathematics and science publishing. Over time, however, the design drifted far from those academic roots. Panov redrew the contours in FontForge, the open-source font editor, until Istok became an original humanist sans in its own right.

What truly sets Istok Web apart is its obsessive screen engineering. Panov manually hinted most glyphs — writing TrueType instructions by hand with a tool called xgridfit — specifically so the font would render crisply on LCD displays. That’s painstaking, unglamorous work most free fonts skip entirely, and it’s why Istok Web stays sharp at small sizes where many typefaces blur. The character set matches the ambition: over 1,200 characters covering extended Latin, full Cyrillic, and IPA phonetic symbols, reflecting the font’s Russian origins and academic DNA.
