The Indiana Pacers have built their identity around the letter “P” and a basketball since the franchise was founded in 1967. The original logo featured a hand holding a basketball inside the letter, while a major 1990 redesign replaced the hand with horizontal speed lines that still define the Pacers symbol today.
The circular logo shown here first appeared as an alternate mark in 2005 and became the Pacers’ primary global logo for the 2017–18 season. The 2017 brand refresh also introduced new uniforms, court graphics and Indiana-focused secondary marks, although the team has not publicly credited a specific individual designer for the current logo.
The “Pacers” name itself has an unusual double meaning. It refers both to the pace car tradition of the Indianapolis 500 and to pacers used in harness racing at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where the team originally played. The franchise also chose blue and gold to reflect the colors of the Indiana state flag.
