The current IBM logo was designed by Paul Rand in 1972 and has remained fundamentally unchanged for more than five decades. Known as the “8-bar,” it forms the letters IBM from eight horizontal stripes, creating a distinctive sense of movement while preserving the strong serif letterforms of the company’s earlier identity.

Rand had already redesigned IBM’s logo in 1956 with solid letterforms based on City Medium. He later transformed those letters into a striped version, first experimenting with a 13-bar design in the 1960s before arriving at the simpler eight-bar mark in 1972. The reduced number of stripes made the logo clearer and easier to reproduce while giving IBM a more dynamic technology-focused identity.

IBM originally stood for International Business Machines, a name adopted in 1924. Although the company and its technology have changed dramatically since then, the 1972 logo has survived without a major redesign and remains IBM’s primary corporate mark today, making it one of the longest-running identities in the technology industry.
