Gotham was originally commissioned for GQ magazine. Tobias Frere-Jones based the design on lettering found across New York City, especially mid-century signs and architectural lettering.

Gotham font is geometric but not sterile. Gotham feels solid, direct and structural with wide letters, a large x-height and clean curves. It became especially recognizable through major identity systems, campaign graphics and public signage.

Gotham Rounded keeps the same basic skeleton but softens the stroke endings. That gives the rounded styles a less formal and more approachable tone than the main family.

Gotham vs Gotham Rounded

The main family has sharper terminals and a more serious tone. Gotham Rounded uses softened terminals while keeping the same general proportions. It is useful when you want the same Gotham structure with a friendlier finish.
