The Google logo is one of the most recognizable wordmarks in modern technology. Its current version uses a custom geometric sans-serif style with the familiar blue, red, yellow and green color sequence. Although the design looks simple, it was built to work across search pages, mobile apps, browser tabs, voice interfaces, product icons and small digital screens.
Google introduced the current logo in 2015, replacing the older serif wordmark with a cleaner and more flexible design. The update kept the brand’s playful color system, but made the logo easier to use in modern digital products. The tilted “e” also remained as a small detail that keeps the wordmark from feeling too rigid.

About the Google Logo

Google began as a Stanford research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Before the name Google, the project was called BackRub because it analyzed backlinks to understand the importance of web pages.
The name Google comes from “googol,” the mathematical term for 1 followed by 100 zeros. That idea matched the company’s goal of organizing a huge amount of information and making it easier to find.
The logo has changed several times since the early search engine years. Early versions used shadows, serif letters and a more playful web-era style. In 2015, Google moved to the cleaner wordmark used today.
Logo Design Notes
The current Google logo works because it balances structure and friendliness. The geometric letterforms make it clean and readable, while the multi-color palette keeps it approachable and instantly recognizable.
The 2015 redesign was also practical. A serif logo worked well on desktop search pages, but Google needed a system that could perform better on phones, apps, watches, voice search and small interface spaces. Therefore, the new wordmark became simpler, flatter and easier to scale.
One important detail is the rotated “e.” Without it, the logo would feel more mechanical. That small angle gives the wordmark a more human and playful tone, which fits Google’s long-running visual personality.
