The Goodyear logo combines its bold uppercase wordmark with the Wingfoot, a winged-foot symbol that has represented the company for more than a century. Positioned within the Goodyear name, the emblem gives the identity a direct connection to speed, travel and movement while remaining recognizable independently of the full wordmark.
The Wingfoot was conceived by Goodyear founder Frank Seiberling after he was inspired by a statuette of Mercury in his home. In Roman mythology, Mercury was the messenger of the gods and was associated with travel and commerce. Goodyear first used the Wingfoot trademark in advertising in 1901, when it promoted the company’s new Straight Side tire.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1898 by Frank Seiberling, who started the business with his brother C.W. Seiberling in two former factory buildings. The company was named in honor of Charles Goodyear, whose work on vulcanized rubber in the 19th century helped make durable rubber products and modern tires possible.
Goodyear’s identity has been refined over its long history, but the Wingfoot has remained its defining symbol. It has appeared on tires, racing cars, retail locations and the Goodyear Blimp, which became another major part of the brand after the company began using blimps for marketing in 1925. The familiar Goodyear wordmark and Wingfoot continue to form the company’s primary logo today.
