A One-Man Foundry’s Bestseller

Gilroy was designed by Radomir Tinkov, a Bulgarian type designer based in Sofia. Before launching his foundry, Tinkov worked as a graphic and web designer. He began drawing typefaces to solve problems in his own client work, then started his independent foundry in 2009.

Released in 2016, Gilroy became his best-known typeface. Tinkov describes it as the “younger brother” of Qanelas, his earlier geometric sans family. However, Gilroy feels cleaner, more neutral and easier to use across modern branding, UI design and editorial layouts.

Gilroy sits between strict geometry and warmth. Its structure is clean and circular, but it does not feel completely mechanical. For example, the lowercase “g” and capital “Q” give the family enough personality to stand apart from more generic geometric sans-serifs.

Part of Gilroy’s spread came from a smart giveaway. Tinkov released the Light and ExtraBold weights for free, and those two files travelled quickly across the design internet. As a result, Gilroy appeared in student projects, mockups and brand systems before many teams licensed the full family.

That freemium approach helped turn Gilroy into one of Tinkov’s most visible fonts. It also made the family familiar to designers who needed a polished geometric sans without starting from a large commercial system.
