Five Hundred Years in Three Fonts

Here’s the twist most people don’t know: the “Garamond” on your computer isn’t actually based on Claude Garamond’s letters. Monotype’s Drawing Office created this version in 1922 from roman types cut in 1615 by Jean Jannon — a French punchcutter working a generation after Garamond, following his designs so closely that Jannon’s work was misattributed to Garamond for centuries. The chain runs deeper still: Garamond’s 16th-century types were themselves modeled on letters cut by Francesco Griffo for the Venetian printer Aldus Manutius in 1495. And the italic in this family comes from yet another hand — types cut around 1557 by Robert Granjon, the era’s great italic specialist. Three fonts, five centuries, at least four punchcutters.

Claude Garamond himself, working in Paris in the mid-1500s, was among the first independent type designers in history — cutting type as its own craft rather than as a printer’s side trade. His letterforms defined what we now call the old-style serif: modest stroke contrast, a gently tilted stress inherited from the broad-nib pen, and proportions tuned for long, comfortable reading. That’s why virtually every era has produced its own Garamond revival, from this Monotype cut to Adobe Garamond, Stempel Garamond, and the free EB Garamond.

Monotype’s version earned its ubiquity the usual way: Microsoft licensed it into Office and Windows, making it the Garamond for hundreds of millions of people. It’s the elegant, bookish serif of choice for essays, novels, and academic papers — famously easy on the eyes over long stretches, and noticeably economical with ink and page count compared to bulkier serifs.

What It’s Best At

Garamond is a text face before anything else. Its natural habitat is books, long documents, academic writing, editorial layouts, and any design that wants old-world credibility with genuine reading comfort — the “air of informality” Monotype itself describes, unusual for something so classical. It sets noticeably smaller and lighter than Times New Roman at the same point size, so nudging it up half a point is a common trick for balance. At display sizes it stays elegant but quiet; if you need Garamond’s spirit with more drama for headlines, a display cut like Cormorant Garamond is the better tool, keeping this family for the body text it was born for.
