The FedEx logo was introduced in 1994 when Federal Express adopted the shorter FedEx name as its primary brand identity. Designed by Lindon Leader while serving as Senior Design Director at Landor Associates, the compact purple-and-orange wordmark was created to communicate speed, precision and reliability while giving the growing company a more international identity.

Its most famous feature is the hidden right-pointing arrow formed by the negative space between the “E” and “x.” Leader developed the custom lettering by combining characteristics of Univers and Futura, adjusting the letterforms until the arrow appeared naturally without adding a separate symbol. The core design has remained virtually unchanged since 1994.

For years, FedEx used different colors for the “Ex” to distinguish services such as Ground, Freight and Express. The company began consolidating these variants in 2016, standardizing the familiar purple-and-orange combination across its operating companies while preserving the original hidden-arrow design.
