The Detroit Pistons introduced their current primary logo on May 16, 2017, returning to the classic red, white and blue basketball identity closely associated with the team’s championship-winning “Bad Boys” era of the late 1980s and early 1990s. It replaced the more modern basketball design used since 2005 and brought the franchise visually closer to its historic 1979–1996 logo.
The 2017 logo was developed during a six-month design process by the Pistons’ creative team in collaboration with the NBA and Nike, rather than being credited to a single designer. While the overall shape is deliberately retro, details were modernized with more accurate basketball groove lines, updated lettering and a chrome outline — a subtle reference to Detroit’s Motor City heritage.
