The Dallas Mavericks introduced the foundation of their current identity for the 2001–02 season, replacing the original cowboy-hat basketball logo with a sharper emblem built around a horse head, basketball and shield. The redesign also moved the franchise away from its long-running blue and green palette toward royal blue, navy and silver.
The logo received its latest primary update for the 2017–18 season. Its composition remained essentially unchanged, with adjustments focused mainly on the shades of blue used throughout the identity. No individual designer or agency has been publicly credited for either the original 2001 primary logo or the later color refinement.
The Mavericks’ first logo has a better-documented design story. It was created in 1980 by Bill Winn of Stark Design Marketing after team executive Norm Sonju requested dozens of revisions — Sonju later recalled approving the design only after 77 versions. The original blue and green colors were chosen partly because the seats at the new Reunion Arena were already being installed in those colors.
