Courier New is based on Courier, which Howard “Bud” Kettler designed for IBM in the 1950s.

Microsoft later brought Courier New to Windows. From there it became a familiar choice for scripts, plain-text files, tables and early programming work, helped by its fixed-width spacing.

Design Notes

Courier New has wide characters, slab serifs and fairly light strokes. Courier New gives narrow and wide letters the same character width.

That mechanical spacing gives the font its typewriter character. Screenplays are still one of the places where Courier New appears most often. The same fixed spacing also suits code samples, tables and other text that depends on exact alignment.

Similar Fonts

Courier, Courier Prime, Liberation Mono and Nimbus Mono are close alternatives. Courier Prime keeps the classic typewriter structure but was redrawn with screenwriting and modern text use in mind.
