The Coca-Cola logo is one of the longest-running and most recognizable wordmarks in branding. Its origins date to 1886, when bookkeeper and business partner Frank M. Robinson suggested the Coca-Cola name, believing that the two capital Cs would look effective in advertising. Robinson also wrote the name in the flowing Spencerian script that became the foundation of the logo still used today.

Although the script has been refined slightly over more than a century, its fundamental structure has remained remarkably consistent. Red and white also became closely associated with Coca-Cola from its earliest advertising, while later visual assets such as the Dynamic Ribbon and Arden Square expanded the identity beyond the wordmark itself.

In July 2026, Coca-Cola introduced a new global visual identity developed with JKR. Rather than redesigning the famous logo, the new system gives greater prominence to the Spencerian script, Coca-Cola red and white, the Dynamic Ribbon and the Arden Square across packaging, retail environments, equipment and digital experiences. The refresh is designed to create a more consistent Coca-Cola identity across more than 200 markets.

Coca-Cola itself was created in Atlanta on May 8, 1886 by pharmacist Dr. John Stith Pemberton and was first sold at Jacobs’ Pharmacy for five cents a glass. Robinson named the drink and created its famous handwritten identity, while businessman Asa Candler later acquired control of the formula and built Coca-Cola into a rapidly expanding commercial brand.
