The current Cisco logo is based on a redesign introduced in 2006, when the company’s long-running bridge symbol was simplified into nine rounded vertical lines above a cleaner Cisco wordmark. The update removed the heavier structure of earlier versions while preserving the visual idea that had represented the company since its earliest years.
The 2006 identity was designed by Jerry Kuyper and Joe Finocchiaro, working with Cisco’s brand team. One of the main goals was to make the logo easier to reproduce across different media without losing the recognizable bridge shape. The simplified mark remains the foundation of Cisco’s corporate logo today.
The bridge is a reference to San Francisco, the city that inspired the Cisco name. Founders Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner established the company in 1984, and “Cisco” was derived from the final part of “San Francisco.” The vertical bars in the logo abstract the Golden Gate Bridge while also fitting naturally with a company built around networks and connectivity.
