The Chicago Bulls have used the same iconic bull-head logo since the franchise was founded in 1966, making it one of the rare NBA identities to survive for decades without a major redesign. The mark is widely credited to commercial designer Dean P. Wessel, who created the fierce red bull with black details and distinctive red-tipped horns for team founder Dick Klein.
The Bulls name and logo also reflect Chicago’s history as a major center of the meatpacking industry and the team’s original connection to the Chicago Stockyards. According to the Bulls, Klein considered names such as Matadors and Toreadors before settling on the shorter “Bulls.” Despite becoming one of the world’s most recognizable sports logos during the Michael Jordan era, the original 1966 design has never needed a replacement.
One unusual part of the logo’s story is that Wessel reportedly created it as a favor to Klein and received game tickets rather than a traditional design fee or royalties. Klein also specifically requested the red marks on the tips of the horns, adding an aggressive detail that remains part of the logo today.
