The Charlotte Hornets unveiled their current logo on December 21, 2013, ahead of the franchise’s return from the Charlotte Bobcats name to the Hornets for the 2014–15 season. The aggressive hornet combines the team’s classic purple and teal colors with a basketball integrated directly into the insect’s body, creating a modern interpretation of the original Hornets identity.
RARE Design worked on the Hornets’ broader brand identity, while the official design process was credited as a collaboration between the team, Jordan Brand and the NBA’s Global Merchandising Group. Rather than crediting a single designer, the organization described the identity as a team effort intended to reconnect Charlotte with the heritage of the original Hornets while giving the brand a sharper, more contemporary appearance.
The Hornets name has a much older connection to Charlotte than the basketball team itself. According to the franchise, British commander General Cornwallis described the city as “a hornet’s nest of rebellion” during the American Revolutionary War. That history helped make the hornet a natural symbol for the city and remains part of the story behind the team’s identity today.
