The CE mark is the European conformity marking used on products covered by specific European Union legislation. By affixing the mark, the manufacturer declares that the product meets the applicable EU requirements and that the required conformity assessment has been completed. CE marking is mandatory only for product categories for which relevant EU rules specifically require it.

The familiar symbol consists of the letters “CE,” associated with the French term “Conformité Européenne,” or European Conformity. Its standardized form was established in European legislation in 1993. When the mark is enlarged or reduced, its official proportions must be preserved, and its standard minimum height is 5 mm unless specific product legislation allows an exception.

CE marking does not mean that a product was approved, tested or certified by the European Union, and it does not indicate where a product was manufactured. Depending on the applicable legislation, conformity may be assessed by the manufacturer or may require the involvement of a notified body before the CE mark can be applied.
