For seventeen years, Calibri was the familiar face of Microsoft Office. It appeared whenever millions of users opened a new Word document, spreadsheet, presentation or email.

Calibri was designed by Dutch type designer Lucas de Groot in the early 2000s. It was part of Microsoft’s ClearType Font Collection. The ClearType project focused on screen readability. Microsoft wanted fonts that stayed clear on the LCD displays becoming common at the time.

De Groot shaped Calibri as a compact humanist sans serif. It has softly rounded stroke endings, open forms and a deliberately quiet personality.

Calibri Font and Microsoft Office

When Microsoft Office 2007 arrived, Calibri replaced Times New Roman as the default typeface in Word. It soon became the standard Office font for everyday documents.

Calibri appeared alongside Cambria, Candara, Consolas, Constantia and Corbel. These were the main type families developed for the ClearType collection.

Microsoft began replacing Calibri with Aptos as the default Office typeface in 2023. However, Calibri remains available in Microsoft products. It also continues to appear in older documents, templates and corporate systems.

Fontgate: When a Font Became Evidence

Maryam Nawaz and the Calibri Fontgate controversy

Calibri later became part of a document-forensics controversy known as “Fontgate.” During the Panama Papers investigation, declarations submitted by Maryam Nawaz were dated February 2006. However, the documents appeared to use Calibri.

That detail raised questions because Calibri was not yet in general public distribution at that date. The font mismatch became one clue in a wider dispute about when the documents were created.

Calibri alone did not remove Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office. Pakistan’s Supreme Court disqualified him over information omitted from his financial declarations.

The case still shows why fonts can matter in digital evidence. A typeface can reveal a timeline problem, even when it is not proof by itself.

Calibri has also appeared in other disputed documents. One example is Türkiye’s Balyoz case, where digital evidence claimed to date from 2003 drew attention because of later font usage.

Similar Fonts to Calibri

Aptos is Calibri’s official successor as the Microsoft Office default. It is the best choice if you want to stay current with Microsoft’s newer document style.

Carlito is useful for compatibility work. It is a freely licensed, metric-compatible Calibri substitute, so documents can keep almost the same line breaks.

Lato, Open Sans and Source Sans 3 are also good alternatives. They offer a similar warm, humanist feel with open-source licensing.
